HANA Performance Check

HANA performance - one of the most discussed topics

The topic of HANA performance is one of the most discussed topics in nearly every single SAP project we are involved. Performance has always been an important aspect in general; however, particularly when switching databases or application releases - whether moving from anyDB to HANA or, more specifically, from ERP on anyDB to S/4HANA - topics such as testing and performance increasingly take center stage as the go-live date approaches. It not only how we can test the productive load, it is more and more the question how we can compare and optimize it? Also the migration or conversion time falls under the aspect performance.

In the last years we faced many performance issues in different scenarios and we developed a tool-set to create performance reports. We identify business critical workload, rate and prioritize it. We optimize the statement on DB level or map it to special workload classes. If this finally not solve the issue we are working with strong partners to optimize the logic, because we are techies and not developers ;)

Here is a sneak preview of one performance report which was made for a HANA DB revision update (target 89.05). In the last years we faced many issues due to strange behavior of the HANA optimizer regarding e.g. the new standard SQL engine HEX. We are not only focusing on pure SQL runtime even more we have a look on different aspects of the runtime:

  1. CPU time
  2. network time
  3. prepare time
  4. memory usage
  5. plan id / engine change
  6. change in the amount of execution
  7. change in the amount of resulting rows
  8. change in the variation of execution (many different SQL hashes with one application source)

This means there is no standard performance report - each report is individual and tailored per customer with a different focus. We use different methods and tools for it. There is no AI combining such know how for you - therefore the SAP documentation is too bad and limited in accessing it ;) This means that an expert is still required to develop well-founded recommendations, validate the solution - and, not to be forgotten, to assume responsibility for it as well!

For comparison we used in this scenario one full week before and after the DB update. Overall you can see that the new HANA revision without any parameter changes and performance optimizations is faster. Does this mean, however, that we don’t need to worry about slower queries? No - because only the client knows which workloads are truly business-critical and which are not.

There are some degraded statements. In some of these cases, a change to the SQL engine is the root cause. The fallback to legacy engines is still present in the latest SPS08 revision. There are still limitations you cannot use the SQL engine HEX.

Top 20 SQL statements before and after
Engine changes

Even when the above reports looks quite good for the top statements we identified more than 20 business critical statements which we could improve.

The reasons?

  1. Mostly wrong engine
  2. high prepare times
  3. wrong buffering settings
  4. wrong HANA parameters
  5. missing single column indexes

9 of 20 changes are already in production and we can see the performance boost:

9 improved critical statements

It is not just about having a basic understanding of how well SQL queries or various processes perform. It is far more important to know what is mission-critical for the company and at what response time issues begin to arise.

We are supporting with such health checks, hyper care and performance optimizations in all scenarios which are connected to HANA regardless if they are running in a SAP ERP cloud environment or on-premise. Please be aware: the performance tasks (incl. responsibility and analysis) are not covered within your RISE journey!

Orientation in DMO scenarios
von Dominik Fiedler • 21. Oktober 2026
There are multiple DMO scenarios and use cases. We heard of many confusions and mixed up statements which we want to order: SUM can not only update software components, but can also execute a database migration (for ABAP based systems)
DMOVE2S4 and Homogeneous option for SAP SUM DMO
von Jens Gleichmann • 21. Oktober 2026
DMO used to be heterogeneous (change of DB). Now you can use DMO with system move (also on-prem to target on-prem) to migrate and convert ECC on HANA to S/4 or just update/upgrade S/4 and move it to another location like other DC or other instance in one step. The DMOVE2S4 is just to move and convert to the cloud in one step. This includes also anyDB source systems and downtime-optimization techniques (doDMO and doC).

HANA OS maintenance
von Jens Gleichmann • 27. Juli 2026
Please notice that when you want to run HANA 2.0 SPS07, you need defined OS levels. As you can see RHEL7 and SLES12 are not certified for SPS07. The SPS07 release of HANA is the basis for the S/4HANA release 2023 which is my recommended go-to release for the next years. Keep in mind that you have to go to SPS07 when you are running SPS06 because it will run out of maintenance end of 2023.

inverted individual index is a special type of SAP HANA index wich can save memory
von Jens Gleichmann • 6. April 2026
An inverted individual index is a special type of SAP HANA index which can only cover unique indexes. This includes all primary key structures. Unlike traditional column store indexes on more than one column (inverted value, inverted hash) an inverted individual index (Inv Idv Idx) doesn't need a dedicated concat.

SAP HANA performance issues with THP on multi-NUMA node systems
von Jens Gleichmann • 30. März 2026
SAP HANA systems may experience high swap usage, hangs, or performance issues when THP (Transparent Huge Pages) is enabled with "madvise". This occurs on multi-NUMA node systems where one or more NUMA nodes are close to full memory usage while others have plenty of free memory, and counters for THP allocations, direct

HANA performance degradation after upgrade to SPS07+SPS08
von Jens Gleichmann • 9. Januar 2026
With SPS06 and even stronger in SPS07 the HEX engine was pushed to be used more often. This results on the one hand side in easy scenario to perfect results with lower memory and CPU consumption ending up in faster response times. But in scenarios with FAE (for all entries) together with FDA (fast data access), it can result in bad performance. After some customers upgraded their first systems to SPS07 I recommended to wait for Rev. 73/74. But some started early with Rev. 71/72 and we had to troubleshoot many statement. If you have similar performance issues after the upgrade to SPS07 feel free to contact us! Our current recommendation is to use Rev. 74 with some workarounds. The performance degradation is extreme in systems like EWM and BW with high analytical workload.
